About Us
In May 2020, the mayor and city council of Charleston, South Carolina took down the monument of John C. Calhoun from where it stood in Marion Square for over a century. This action violated a 120-year-old trust agreement and was designed to appease criminal mob behavior that rampaged through Charleston that spring. The Calhoun Monument Society is thus dedicated to the restoration and public re-erection of the monument, ensuring it remains on property safely and regularly accessible to the public in South Carolina.
Having gained possession of the monument and its associated time capsule in 2025, the Society advocates for the monument’s return to a prominent public place, viewing it as a tribute to one of the most significant figures in American history. By preserving and caring for this work of art, the Society seeks to perpetuate the history and memory of Calhoun and promote a deeper understanding of his life and work.
